Beyond The Broken Spectrum

A story from AlterNet tells of a woman, Jamie Leigh Jones employed by Halliburton over in Iraq that was gang-raped by co-workers. She was not allowed to bring her case to court as per her contract that stipulates that all sexual assault allegations would only be heard in private arbitration.

Offering Ms. Jones legal relief was Senator Al Franken of Minnesota who offered an amendment to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies like KBR “if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.” Thirty GOP senators opposed the effort though. Two Democrats did not vote on the bill, for reasons currently unknown.

It seems these warhawks will do anything to keep defense companies in business, even by allowing the chance of such an atrocious act to be committed in the future without any recourse for the victim.
