Legal medicinal grow ops declared a threat to public safety
Residents of Canada that are allowed by law to grow their own marijuana for medicinal purposes have come under fire, with their grow operations being declared a threat to public safety. I wouldn’t put too much stock into it though, as the only person to have so far declared it is the President of the British Columbia Fire Chief’s Association, Stephen Gamble.
“We’re concerned about the health, safety and welfare of the public and firefighters who unsuspectingly and increasingly come into contact with the dangers associated with these operations,” he proclaims. He then went on to say that it was time for municipalities to become involved in the regulation and use of private homes for growing medicinal marijuana and for them to be inspected to ensure they meet electrical and building standards.
His main argument for this intrusion of privacy? He claims that both legal and illegal grow operations look exactly alike and that they all had “shoddy workmanship.” Further from this, he gives no reason for why they should have such an intrusion of government into in an individual’s private life. When asked if there had ever been any fires associated with the legal medicinal marijuana grow operations, he said that he knew of none. He wants grow operations to be restricted to green houses and industrial sites.
Currently, the law allows municipal inspectors to enter homes having higher than average electrical consumption or showing signs of being used as a growing operation such as closed windows and excessive condensation. The federal program does not permit information on legal growing operations to be given to municipal authorities or fire departments though, likely because of privacy concerns, and rightly so.
I suppose that this man is upset because he doesn’t have enough power over other people, and wants to expand government powers to serve his own agenda. There is nothing that shows that these people that are legally growing their own medicine are creating any sort of hazard for the public.
