Beyond The Broken Spectrum

A former San Antonio police officer that was arrested back in July for the sexual assault of a woman was sentenced to two years probation today, fined $500, ordered to pay the victim $436 in restitution, and was permanently suspended from law enforcement.

On June 26th officer Gregory Mickel pulled over a truck that had picked up the woman, putting the her in the back of his patrol car and telling the man to leave. The woman had prior arrests for prostitution and was threatened to be arrested for her third felony charge unless she had sex with the officer. He then assaulted the woman in the back of his patrol car and took her to her house, where she then called 911 to report the rape.

Mickel was one of the two officers to respond to the incident, in which he assumed responsibility of writing up the report. Computer records show the he never actually reported the incident though, and the GPS on the officer’s vehicle confirms the location of the officer at the time of the reported incident.

What should be questioned here is this man’s sentence. Why is it that any other sex crime would warrant a sex offender status, but this time is different? Is the officer getting special treatment for his status; possibly. Is the case different just because the woman is a prostitute? Is she some how lower in status than the rest of us because what she does is “morally wrong”?  Either way, justice wasn’t served here.
